Jonathan “Jonnie” Welch on his first appearance on CNL2 in February 2024.

Jonathan “Jonnie” Welch will not be progressing to the general election for San Juan County Council residency district 2. But his primary election opponents are crediting him with making it a better race, and thanking him for running a campaign with integrity.

If there was an award for “Most Improved Player” this primary season, Jon would win it hands down. He was first to declare his intention to run for County Council this year, and he was a bit green on some issues. But he’s a highly intelligent person, and he studied hard. He listened to many, many citizens. And by the final forum in Eastsound, Jon was a peer to opponents Rick Hughes and Justin Paulsen.

Jon told CNL2 this week, “I am grateful to every candidate for San Juan County Council this year. The bar was set high, and needs to stay there. I am thankful for the experience. And, the ability to contribute to the conversation. Nothing going forward will be easily accomplished. But, I will be watching closely. “

When reached for comment, Rick Hughes said, “I want to thank Jonnie for being in the race for bringing good ideas and new perspectives to the campaign. His involvement made this a better race and me a better candidate.”

Justin Paulsen told CNL2, “For many years, Jon has been a rock for the people of Orcas in his service with Washington State Ferries.  He has been a critical piece in assisting and representing our community.  I expect that that impact will continue well past this election.

“I appreciate Jon’s participation in this campaign,” Justin continued.  “His involvement helped to focus the discussion on the real-life needs of working islanders, which is something that cannot be overstated in the election going forward.”

At the end of the July 18 Eastsound forum hosted by the League of Women Voters, Rick Hughes choked up in his closing statement when he mentioned his wife. It felt like a sentimental, reflective moment for the candidates. It was the last major group event for them in the primary election cycle, and election day was just 2-1/2 weeks away. They all had made their cases and voting had already begun. Once Rick Hughes broke the seal, the sense of completeness of the primary election seemed to hit Jon Welch when he took the microphone.

His message in the final forum was the same as it was when he declared in February in CNL2 studio. Jon’s voice cracked as he explained that he simply wants to serve.

Jon Welch’s eloquent and emotional one-minute summary speech at the Orcas candidates’ forum is below.

Thank you Jonathan Welch.
