UPDATE 1: Wednesday, August 7, 2024 @ 5:45 p.m.

An unexpectedly large receipt of final-day votes arrived in the County Elections office today.

On Tuesday night, Camolyn Armstrong, county elections manager, told CNL2 that 800 uncounted “batched” votes were in-house last night, but she did indicate more definitely would arrive today.

Indeed, many more arrived today.

This evening, after publishing the results of 287 more ballots today, there are still 2,660 ballots to be verified and tabulated. Even more could arrive via U.S. Mail on Thursday.

Armstrong said it is unusual to receive such a large number of votes from final-day voting.

Some observers were surprised Tuesday night at what looked like low voter turnout for these highly visible elections. The revised total now brings the turnout more in line with expectations. Voter turnout for this primary election will now be at least 48%.

Candidates and campaign managers will now go back into election watch mode, with so many votes yet uncounted.

With 84 percent of expected votes counted, leaders in the two County Council races and the two local propositions are evident but not complete. At 8:45 p.m. Camolyn Armstrong, San Juan County elections manager, told CNL2 there at least 800 more uncounted ballots and some more are expected to arrive through the mail. Those are expected to be counted Wednesday, and a final count — after auditing processes — is expected Friday.
