San Juan Island’s David Jenkins has had a fascinating life so far.
In this video, David shares his enthusiasm for the success of the San Juan Islands Sculpture Park, of which he is president. And he makes a pitch for volunteers.
He laughs when he talks of a sculpture park run by a person with no artistic skills. But it’s not wholly true that he’s not an artist. David Jenkins is a poet. His poetry is a feature of the sculpture park, adjacent to many of the art installations. And the poems are available in a book titled Thought Catching: A Journey through the San Juan Islands Sculpture Park ($7.95)
He also talks of his fascinating career as a freshwater biologist, which led him to jobs at zoos and aquariums. He was a pioneer in interactive “meta zoos” in the 1980s and 90s.
Hear David describe the pinnacle of his career, and the famous people (and animals) he met along the way.
David Jenkins’ book on poetry can be purchased at Griffin Bay Bookstore & Cafe in Friday Harbor or Louella’s Gifts in Roche Harbor.
The following video is approximately 8 minutes in duration.
