SJI’s own John J. Nance answers questions about airline safety

John J. Nance is an internationally-recognized expert in airline safety. He is the expert ABC News has turned to for three decades when they have a question about airline safety, or they are covering a serious airline incident. He was also the on-camera subject matter expert in 18 episodes of the television series named Mayday, which analyzes major airline disasters.

John J. Nance also happens to be a long-term resident of San Juan Island.

A rash of crashes, near-misses, and other issues have been in the news in 2025, so we thought we’d ask John to explain. After all, many islanders travel by air — especially in the winter. And in the summer many part-time residents trek here by air.
