Bill 7,” a bill filed in the British Columbian provincial legislature known as the “Economic Stabilization (Tariff Response) Act,” could impose a tariff on goods shipped on British Columbia highways between Washington and Alaska.

That’s just one of many ways the bill — if passed into law — could empower the government of B.C. Premier David Eby to fight the new trade war between the U.S. and Canada.

In the recorded conversation below, Marc Lee, a senior economist with the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, talks about how the bill — if passed into law — could empower the tit-for-tat trade war. And then he discusses even harsher measures Canada might employ, including:

  • repatriating Canadian assets currently owned by Americans
  • tightening Canadian intellectual property laws that could crimp American business profits in Canada for years to come

Both of those measures would likely permanently change the relationship between the U.S. and Canada, and might survive long past the end of a trade war.
