Kristen Douglas-Seitz: Young Artist Works in Ancient Method

CNL2 VIDEO AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE

Kristen Douglas-Seitz is a sculptor who works in bronze (a metal made of mostly copper and a smaller ratio of tin). She had wanted to be a sculptor since her earliest memories. Breaking into sculpture from Tulsa, Oklahoma wasn’t easy. Years ago, her path crossed with Jocelyn Russell, a San Juan Island-based sculptor with a national reputation. Kristen became a Jocelyn Russell mega-fan. After assisting Jocelyn on a project, Kristen was invited to visit Jocelyn and Michael Dubail‘s San Juan Island studio. Michael is Joceyln’s husband and a professional welder who participates in the bronze creative process.

Kristen’s friends expected her trip from Oklahoma to be a short working trip. Once here, she knew she was here to stay. And before long, she met a local man, Jesse Douglas Sites, and they married here.

Kristen holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, majoring in painting. She teaches sculpture in classes around the country.

In this interview, Kristen describes the bronze creative process — how casts are made at the mold maker and foundry, and how finishes are applied.

Kristen said San Juan Island has been a major support for her creativity. She said, “There are so many artists here. So many different artists. And everybody is so nice. I just haven’t met another group that surpassed Oklahoma until now.”

This CNL2 video is approximately 34 minutes in duration.
