The San Juans are home to some of the most interesting people in the world. John J. Nance is one of them.

This is the first of a three-part interview of a humble, good-humored, and brilliant man who is also our neighbor. It’s also the story of a person who became comfortable with enormous responsibility in several national and international fields.

Part 2 of this conversation starts with Journal of the San Juans’ editor Heather Spaulding asking how John J. Nance’s career in journalism began…at age 8! That eventually led to the Dallas Morning News. Then WFAA radio and television.

At (3:00) minutes into the discussion, John is asked how he learned to write.

(3:30) “Are you still a Texan?”

(5:30) “Was there a teacher in your life who taught you to write?”

(9:30) John shares his amazement at how much credibility (deserved or undeserved) is conveyed to a person by merely appearing on television as an expert.

(11:00) What was John’s specialty in law?

(12:30) John shares his “grave” concern about the deterioration of confidence in the American legal system. He believes our rule of law is not adequately understood by Americans. Plus, he is amazed that perjury is prosecuted less and less. “We’re in big, big trouble,” he said.

(16:55) Jeff asks John to share his memories from when he was a 17-year-old living in Dallas on November 22, 1963, the day John F. Kennedy was assassinated. It was a poignant story, which was not easy for him to tell.

This CNL2 video is approximately 22-1/2 minutes in duration.
