Orca Calf Stranded for Five Weeks Has Swum Free

Members of the Ehattesaht First Nation in Zeballos, British Columbia are celebrating Friday’s freeing of an orca calf from an inlet. The calf, named “Brave Little Hunter” by locals, had been stranded in the inlet for five weeks after her mother died when she became beached in the inlet located on northern Vancouver Island. The tribe and a host of marine mammal experts worked continuously to usher the calf to the open sea.

The plight of the young killer whale became a worldwide news story.

The calf was lured through restrictions in the inlet with seal meat offered by the tribal members. An unusually high tide also was a helpful factor.
