CNL2 likely to close studio in September due to insufficient revenue – Fresh content will continue into the future

Monday, September 9, 2024

Since January, the CNL2 Studio has enabled scores of live public affairs shows, government leader and candidate interviews, and musical performances.  However, subscription purchases are flat at this time and donations have been uneven (although some very generous, thank you!).  Today, there is still no visible or predictable source of revenue present that would pay either Jeremy or Jeff anything resembling a living salary, nor sufficient revenue to pay the lease and utilities (the Masons have been fantastically kind and generous and patient with us, in support of our mission).

So next Monday, we will make the final decision to begin the process of closing the studio.

We hope to reopen a studio, somewhere in San Juan County, later in 2025.

Jeremy and I are completely committed to continuing to produce good content for our subscribers and the general public. That won’t change.

How will we continue to do studio-style interviews?  We will replace studio interviews with “split screen remote” interviews.  The host (sometimes but not always me) will be seated at a desk in one’s home, and the host will interview people who are in their homes or offices, connected by the magic of technology.  It’s the lower-overhead way of doing good interviews.  Out of more than 80 interview shows we have produced in the past year, eight of them have used the “split screen/remote style.”  Above are samples of six of those successful split screen/remote interviews.

  1. The positive side of this is that the technology now is truly portable. SJT will be able to develop without that cumbersome monthly cost. A studio will be great when it happens. SJT is people-powered. Kudos to Jeff and Jeremy and all of the community for volunteering, supporting, and interacting with this important local media.
