BREAKING: San Juan County Sues Town of Friday Harbor over Water Access

FOLLOWING IS A STATEMENT RELEASED BY SAN JUAN COUNTY GOVERNMENT TODAY

SAN JUAN COUNTY, WA. May 21, 2024 – San Juan County made the difficult decision Tuesday, May 21, to file a lawsuit against the Town of Friday Harbor in an effort to protect access to water at the Fairgrounds.

“It was a difficult decision, but Council felt it was a necessary step to protect County residents’ assets,” said Council Chair Jane Fuller. “Year-round activities and programming at the Fairgrounds are community assets supported by access to basic utilities.”

On May 2, 2024, the Town upheld the Notice of Violation and has declined the County’s continued requests for mediation.

The County has a 21-day statutory deadline to appeal the Town’s decision before forfeiting the right to engage in further action. Given the time constraint, the lawsuit was filed May 21, and can be viewed here: https://www.sanjuancountywa.gov/DocumentCenter/View/29763/Verified-Complaint-FILED_Land-Use-Petition-and-Verified-Complaint-for-Declaratory-Judgment-and-Injunctive-Relief_052124.

The County remains hopeful that both organizations can work together to find a solution acceptable to all.
