After 40+ live streamed weekly episodes of “Hey…What’s going on around here?” SanJuans.Today experienced two failed live streams, the second was last week. So we have moved away from our incumbent live streaming service and are trying out the YouTube live streaming service.

The great majority of family members whose loved one transitioned into death with the aid and comfort of hospice come away from the experience with profound respect and gratitude for hospice. Many believe in hospice so much after the grieving becomes manageable that they donate to, or volunteer with, hospice to make it available to others.

On Tuesday’s live “Hey…What’s Going on Around Here” with Heather Spaulding, we spoke with Steve Porten, President Hospice of San Juan.

At 6:00 minutes into the discussion, Steve explains the basics of our local hospice — now in its 40th year here. He explains the differences between Hospice of San Juan and Hospice of the Northwest.

(7:50) Steve explains that Hospice of San Juan lends out medical equipment for any household that asks, even if the person in need is not in hospice.

(8:45) What are the core services provided by Hospice of San Juan?

(9:25) Why did Steve get involved with Hospice of San Juan 10 years ago?

(12:25) Steve describes how the intake process works when a call is placed asking for hospice help.

(13:00) Steve describes the power of music in hospice care.

(14:40) What are the various roles for hospice volunteers?

(16:00) How are volunteer hospice workers trained for this important role?

Training is coming up in October. They have 35 volunteers and they need more!

(19:40) Hospice of San Juan is a partner of the San Juan Island Community Foundation.

The Hospice of San Juan hotline is (360) 472-0322. It is staffed by a volunteer every day. Or email: [email protected]
