Dave, 70 years young: ‘I Volunteer at CNL2 Because it’s Fun!’

CNL2 is now a non-profit. It is no longer owned by founders Jeff and Jeremy. Now it can never be sold off. And it probably never will be closed.

CNL2 is now guided by a Board of Directors made up of respected local citizens. Jeff and Jeremy now serve at the Board’s pleasure.

CNL2 is now Community streaming television, and Community streaming radio.

Public TV and public radio by and for the San Juans.

There is now the potential for this non-profit to grow into an amazing jewel in the San Juans. It can become a rare asset for a one of the smallest, most remote (and coolest) counties in the Pacific Northwest.

Growing into CNL2’s full potential will require robust volunteerism on a scale similar to the level of engagement with other major non-profits here. We need thousands of volunteer hours.

The Board of Directors, Jeff and Jeremy are now facilitators — enablers for groups and individuals who want to connect to audiences through mass communications.

The shows, the hosts, the topics, the technicians will almost entirely be volunteers.

Community streaming TV and radio is, by definition, centered on volunteers.

The good news: producing community television and radio is super fun!

Come visit the CNL2 studio and see why most first-time visitors take one look and say “Wow.”

Orcas Island, this is yours, too. Lopez, too. Shaw, Blakely, Crane, Decatur, Waldron. CNL2’s doors are open to you, too. C’mon over to the studio, or contribute via Zoom, or we’ll show you how to open a CNL2 satellite studio on your island.

We invite you to start a new show. Or record music you make. Tell some jokes. Brag on your grandkids. Explain your vision of what our islands can be.

Or, on the other side of the camera, learn how to shoot video at community events. Learn how to edit video. Learn how to do audio engineering. Even learn how to be a reporter.

Because teaching is now built into our mission.

When asked why Dave Schnuckel, 70, cheerfully comes into the CNL2 studio every Tuesday to volunteer an hour before the live noon show begins, he has a four-word answer. “It’s fun and gratifying!”

A lot walks in the front door with Dave — four decades in the television and radio production industry. Not only does he volunteer expert video directing during the live shows, he also adjusts the cameras, he tests the mics, and he teaches CNL2’s Jeremy Tyler how to direct a live television show.

As a non-profit community television and radio station, CNL2 needs volunteers for virtually everything we do. And it’s not just about doing; it’s also about teaching and learning. Investing your skills, whatever they are, in other people to make CNL2 stronger. And building upon friendships along the way.

Below are just some of the volunteer positions we need to fill. And YES we will train you! So someday you can train others.
