$20,000 ‘Special Boost’ Tourism Ad Campaign Underway

Atop the normal Spring season annual tourism advertising campaign proffered by the San Juan Islands Tourism Bureau, a $20,000 “Special Boost” media campaign has been running in Seattle media since May 6. The purpose of the campaign — funded by the Town of Friday Harbor — is to offset a downturn in tourism bookings here this year. A prime factor in the reductions in bookings is the public’s perceptions about the reliability of Washington State Ferry service in the San Juans.
One major media outlet running the special ads is KUOW-FM, 94.9 on the dial. An NPR affiliate with audience demographics that fit well with the classic San Juans visitor, KUOW was ranked #2 in Nielsen ratings (6.9 percent share) in the Seattle market’s April 2024 ratings book.
Here is the script that is being read during the occasional break in KUOW programming:
“Support for KUOW comes from… the San Juan Islands, with views of natural beauty via float planes or ferries including walk-on service to Friday Harbor on San Juan Island. Whale Watching, shops, and restaurants within walking distance of the harbor. Learn more at VisitSanJuans.com. Set your mind to island time.”
The special boost ad campaign ends June 24.
